Basic tailoring and custom sewing in Ithaca, NY

Sometimes you need someone to hem your pants, make something one-of-a-kind, or help you get started on a project.

Services

I’ve always sewn for friends, and have done everything from small repairs to custom work. In general, I charge $20/hour plus materials. For standard alterations (like hemming pants), I have a standard price. For custom work, I’m happy to give estimates for time and materials.

I am up front about how long your project should take and how it fits into my other commitments. I will also let you know if something is beyond my skill level. If we don’t end up collaborating on a project, we might decide to just have some coffee and share a laugh. :)

Alterations

Pants hemming (machine sewn, no lining): $15 per pair

Pants hemming (hand sewn or with a lining): $25 per pair

Small patches, fixes on seams, and basic mending: $15-30

Custom Sewing

I’ve done a little bit of everything. I can make custom garments in all sizes, cute gifts for adults and children, bags, pillows, curtains... you name it. I prefer simple shapes in beautiful fabrics over complex designs with bargain materials.

Other Makes and

Project Consulting

I love to make things and consider myself a proficient knitter, weaver, printmaker, embroiderer, and book binder. Talk to me about the project you have in mind. I can also help you source the perfect supplies or get you started.

FAQs

What can and can’t you sew?

I am a confident seamstress who can work from patterns, photos, and intuition. I can quickly assess an alteration, a repair, or a project to see if it’s worth the time, effort, and cost for both of us. The best projects for me can be completed in less than 2 hours, but I’m open to working with you to create something extra special.

Is this a side hustle?

Kind of. I have a full time job, and this is more of a passion project. My goal is to increase community and connection while developing my own artistic abilities. The money I earn here will be donated or used to attend classes to deepen my skills (a win-win because this is also supporting another artist/teacher!). Friendship and laughter are extremely important to me, so I may also use earnings to treat a friend to lunch.

I have a project, how does this work?

Email me and start a conversation -- I’m excited to hear from you. For alterations and repairs, I only work in the Ithaca area. For custom projects, we may be able to collaborate at a distance.

What else should I know?

Loved clothes last. If something fits you, you’ll wear it more. If something has been repaired, you’ll appreciate it in new ways. Slow fashion supports the tradition of craft and is connected to makers who love what they do.
